Workshop By Mr Simon Ng

On the 24th of May, Mr Simon Ng, a well known band director came all the way from Singapore to visit our band through IMH. He taught us many new techniques and exposed us to a lot of information on Singaporean and Japanese bands. He visits Japanese bands very frequently and he is known as Mr. Takashi there. Mr Simon gave us suggestions to improve ourselves and he hopes to come back and visit us again to see how our band grows.

We are very thankful and grateful that he came over to Kuching to listen to us, voluntarily! He is a very friendly and respected band director. Thank you, Mr Simon!

Teacher’s Day 2014

Image

Once again, it’s teacher’s day!

On the 16th of May, just a few days after our Mid-year exams, our school held the annual teacher’s day celebration. As usual, we played Negaraku, Ibu Pertiwiku and St. Teresa’s School Song for the formal section of Teacher’s Day 2014, themed, 60s 70s and 80s.

Image

After that, we kicked start the informal part of the teacher’s day celebration with “Fireflies” and “Prince of Egypt”.

Image

Then the Form 5s [The Neon Buskers] (that’s us!) presented a ensemble performance “Birdland”. The crowd went wild and the teachers enjoyed it too!

Image

Upon request from our principal, Puan Mary John, we played “Kwek Mambo” spontaneously as it suits the theme. The prefect councils started dancing to the song on the stage, and so did the teachers! Puan Mary requested all the teachers to be up on the stage to dance. It was definitely a special teacher’s day, different from all the other celebrations. All the teachers enjoyed it, very much!

Image

The celebration ended at 12 pm with positive comments from the teachers and our principal. Great job everyone! On behalf of the band, I would like to wish all the teachers a Happy Teacher’s Day! Thank you for your dedication and love for us 🙂

Percussion Performance for the 42nd MSS-Sarawak

Today, on the 5th of April, 5 members from the band (Nadya, Ung, Rohayu, Melissa and Serene) went to Jubilee Ground to officiate the closing ceremony for the 42nd MSS-Sarawak together with the Police Cadet team of our school (to take down the MSSS flag), and a few athletes (as playcard holders) of our school, SMK St. Teresa, Kuching. We were accompanied by Puan Chong Siaw Ning, the band teacher in charge for this event (aka former member of our band),

Our band marched for about 80 meters and played a drum roll for the cadets to bring down the MSSS Flag, to officiate the closing ceremony.

Food Sale and New Instruments! :D

Today, on the 5th of April 2014 (Parent Teacher Day for this Mid Term), we had a food sale to raise funds to buy new instruments/ mouthpieces/ cases. All of us worked together to bring food from home to be sold outside the Music Room. I would like to thank each and everyone who brought/ bought the food today from the bottom of my heart, especially to the parents of our members who prepared most of the food we sold, because without the support from all of you, today’s sale wouldn’t be possible.

Band Workshop from Mr Mike Booty

On the 12th of March, we were given the opportunity to welcome Mr. Mike Booty, Chairman and Musical Director of the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band (SYNYSB) based in Diss, South Norfolk to our band, STS Band with much help from International Music House (IMH). SNYSB is an internationally well-known band as they give out as many as 30 concerts annually, touring many different countries and also won many international awards. We felt really honoured to be given a chance to meet him despite his tight schedule for the week. We appreciate his help very much as we learnt many many things through this workshop. He also exposed us to new and great new methods to guide the band 🙂

This is their official website, please take a look for more information on their band:
