Music Room Clean-up

A few days after the Form 3′s finished their PMR examination, they were off to clean the music room. They diligently cleaned the music room for 3 hours starting from 9 o’ clock.

Merdeka Celebration 2011

On the 26^th August 2011, the school celebrated Malaysia’s 54 years of independence grandly. The whole school was asked to come in traditional clothes to symbolise racial harmony. The band members were also spared from wearing their band uniform on this day. The event was held at the school hall. A total of 49 band members participated this event. All Form 1, 2 and 4 band members and a few Form 3 band members performed. The school band performed two songs ‘Wannabe’ and “Taylor Swift in Concert’ lead by our conductress, Heather Tan. All hard works and effort had been put into this performance so that it would be a successful one.

Band AGM 2011

This year’s AGM was organised by the Form 4′s. We were given a theme from the seniors: The Night of the Living Dead. The AGM was held at Heliconia, BanQuet.

The AGM was held on the 9th of July 2011. We did our preparation a week before the AGM and also on the day itself.

After all the decorations were set up and settled, we went home at noon and came back at 5pm to check on last minute changes. At around 6pm, guests started to arrive (and they were really really early).

At 7pm, the dinner officially starts. Our emcees started by greeting everyone followed by a series of speeches by the representative of the band teachers; Mr Teo, the band instructor; Mr Marvin and the president; Michelle Goh.

After everyone has taken their food, it was time for the entertainment. The Form 4′s did the opening of the entertainment with a dance performance, Thriller.

Singapore Trip 2011

On the 26^th May 2011 until the 30^th May 2011, the school’s band conducted an educational trip to Singapore. A total number of 39 students and 6 teachers were involved in this educational trip. The objective of this trip is to broaden the students’ educational music experience and knowledge. Not only that, it builds up self-confidence and leadership skills.

All 39 students and the teachers’ arrival at the airport at 7.00 in the morning on 26^th May 2011. Our flight to Singapore departed at 9.50 in the morning. We reached Singapore at 11.15 in the morning and met up with the tour guide, Mr. Roland Chan. The bus that was our transportation for the whole trip took us from the airport to the Costa Sand Downtown East Resort where we will be staying while we were in Singapore.

After checked in, we all gathered at the lobby before loading the bus and set off to our first school visit, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music NUS. We were introduced to a few of the stuff members there who gave us a tour around the Conservatory. We were glad to see the orchestra hall, concert hall, recital studio, recording studio, ensembles room, practice rooms and the music library. the music library

After the tour, we went to visit the conservatory’s own gallery. Then we returned to our resort. Everyone had their own free time to walk around the nearby shops.

On the 2^nd day, 27^th May 2011, everyone gathered at the lobby before heading out to Ai Tong Primary School for a band workshop. The instructor of this band workshop was Mr. Ho, Ai Tong Primary School’s own music instructor. The band was able to learn a lot from this workshop.

After lunch, we continued on to the Science Centre. We were able to learn more about science and how things works. We took this opportunity to watch the Hubble in Imax at 2 in the evening. After the movie, we continue walking around in the Science Centre.

We left Science Centre at 4 in the evening and set off to China Town.

We left China Town at around 6 in the evening and return to our resort. After we had a brief rest, most students accompanied by the teachers went to Esplanade by the local LRT train. The students and teachers were fortunate to be able to watch a performance of a group of five Japanese dancers. It was a splendid performance. We left Esplanade at 9 at night and went back to the resort.

The next morning, everyone gathered at the lobby to head out to our first stop, Bukit View Secondary School in Bukit Batok. We had a band exchange among Bukit View Secondary School, Tiong In Scondary School and Ai Tong Primary school. We started by performing a few songs from each schools.

After that, we had a short break. Then, we were divided according to sections for ice breaking games. Everyone had a great time getting to know the each other from different schools. After the ice breaking games, we gathered back in the hall. All the secondary schools played a simple piece instructed by one of their own instructors. It was a great opportunity to learn new things and experience playing with other bands.

At noon, it was the end of the band exchange. After saying our goodbyes, we head off to our second stop of the day, Nanyang Academy Fine Arts. We were fortunate to be able to participate the student festival band programme.

After staying at the academy for around 2 hours, we return to our resort. We took a little rest and went on our way to Orchard Road. We were allowed to walk around the malls and left Orchard Road at 9 at night and called it the day off.

On the 29^th May 2011, we gathered at the lobby once again in the morning as we set off to the landmarks of this city, Singapore. First, we went to the Merlion Park where it is famous for its Merlion statue. Then, we went to the Asian Civilisation Museum which is located very near the Merlion Park.

Everyone was then excited as we head to our next stop, Universal Studio Singapore!

We spent about 5 hours in Universal Studio. Everyone had a wonderful time. Next, we went to Sentosa and spend our time walking around and at the seaside. At 8 at night, we set off to watch a mesmerizing show, the Songs of the Seas. This show was held with a live cast, dramatic effects and pyrotechnics. Water jets, flame bursts, lasers and captivating music make this a one-of-a-kind entertainment spectacle. Everyone enjoyed the show. It was late when it finish, we took the bus straight back to the resort.

On the last day, we wrapped up with breakfast on that Saturday morning and loaded up onto the bus one last time for the trip back to the Changi airport. Everyone was sad they had to leave Singapore but we all had a great experience during this exchange programme.

A Fresh Start

And so, the year of 2011 has reached us. New band committees have been elected and our seniors have retired. And so the handling of the blog has been passed on as well. And so…new layout!

In this month of January we had band auditions. With new juniors and new pieces, we aspire to heighten the band’s skills, in whatever aspects we can.

Theory classes will be held weekly while our current seniors teach their new juniors about their instruments. Everyone is encouraged to practice to their utmost ability for our upcoming concert this May as one of our fundraisers for our trip to Singapore this coming May.

This year, the new committee of 2010/2011 planned the Band AGM. The committee of 2009/2010 gave us one theme: Hawaii, and so we decided to hold it in school!

The juniors went home at around 11am – 12pm while some form 4s stayed on to finish up the decorations and setting the whole place up. We went home around 2pm to get ready and took turns coming back until 6pm, where the form 4s all gathered to light the candles, fire up the barbeque and set up the music.

We only started eating at around 8pm as we were waiting for all our teachers to arrive. This was during the puasa month so we felt really bad for our Malay members, hehe. It was potluck so there was A LOT of food–three whole KH room tables FILLED! We played Hawaiian music in the background (mostly from Lilo and Stitch, hehe) so hopefully we didn’t disturb the nuns too much.

The movie finished at around 11:30pm. Everyone went home, tired. We had lots of fun, and I hope all the other members felt the same!

Form 4s’ Noticeboard 2010!

COOL LOOKING, RIGHT? hahahah! But then it got old and faded, so we had to say goodbye.

So for our next noticeboard, we decided to involve EVERYBODY! we gave each of our members a small piece of coloured paper, and asked them to write what band IS to each of them. We had many many responses

February Events

We resumed practices as usual after an eventful January. We had sectionals on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and combined practices on Saturdays with our instructor from International Music House (IMH), Mr. Marvin Jong. We started our combined practices on Saturday with warm ups such as scales. Then, attendance would be taken. This is then followed by sectionals where the section leader from each section would teach their new juniors the proper way of blowing instruments and the ‘Rubank’. Meanwhile, the other seniors would practice the pieces assigned. By ten a.m., the seniors would practice together in the band room with the guidance and help of Mr. Marvin and the juniors would be taught some basic theory to aid them in sight reading. Practices would end by 12 p.m. During one of our sectionals on the 13^th of February, we received another piece entitled ‘The Check is in the Mail’. On the 20^th of February, we were given another new piece instead, ‘Footloose’. We are practicing this piece for the upcoming celebration of the school’s 125^th anniversary.
